Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) in Office365

If your account has been enabled for authentication you will be required to do a one time set up.

The following screen will appear


Please click Next.

You will be taken to the following page where you will have 2 options of how you can be contacted for verification (we will not be using the second option which is office phone). The options are an authentication phone and mobile app. If you want to authenticate with both options please start with the mobile app option.

  • Authentication phone –simply enter in your mobile phone that you want to be contacted by

                 You will have two options of how to be contacted either via text or call 


After verifying your phone you will be taken to a final page which will give you an additional security verification password   


Please, store this password safely as this will be needed to verify mobile and desktop office365 applications. For example in the below screenshot.


  • Mobile App

Click Set up to configure the mobile app with your phone

The below screen will appear and you will need to follow the instructions.

Once done click Next. 

On the app, you will receive a verification code which changes every 30 seconds. Make sure you enter the current code displaying on your app and verify within 30 seconds

In case you have lost access to the mobile app you should still provide your mobile number for additional security. The below screen will appear, please enter your mobile number and click Next


A final screen will appear for additional security verification, in the case where you are not able to use your phone to secure your specific applications, you will be provided with a pre-given app password to use- make sure you have stored the password safely in your password management vault. This is very important as you will need the password to login into any mobile devices.

Modifying your MFA settings or generate a new App Password

If you have forgotten your App Password or want to change your MFA preference i.e. use text message or mobile app you can change them in portal.office.com 

Click on your initials > My account > under Security Information > Update Info > Add Method > App Password

Note: All apps installed from Office 365 will require an app password to be created.
